Fence and Gate Work in Durham, CA

Fences for horse properties, orchards and country homes south of Chico.

Durham is farm country, just a short drive south of Chico, and fencing out here does real work. Almond and walnut orchards stretch in every direction, and many homes sit on a few acres with horses, goats, chickens or a big garden. That means long property lines, wide gates for tractors and trailers, and fences that have to hold animals, not just mark a line. It also means the ground is flat and open, so the north wind can hit a fence hard, and winter rain can leave low spots soggy for weeks. Around the homes themselves, people want the same things as anywhere else: a private backyard, a fence the dog can't get through and a gate that closes right every time. A lot of Durham properties need both kinds of fence on the same parcel, and we're glad to plan the whole thing at once.

Common work here includes ranch and farm fencing, horse fence, wood privacy fences around the house and drive gates and gate repair for farm roads and driveways. Call or send the form, and we'll come walk the property with you.

Fencing for Horses and Livestock

The right fence depends on what you're keeping in. For horses, we usually suggest no-climb wire with a wood top rail or sight board, about 4.5 to 5 feet tall, so it's easy to see and hard to lean over. For goats and sheep, woven field fence with small openings near the bottom works well, since goats will test every gap. Cattle on bigger acreage can often be handled with field fence or barbed wire, though barbed wire is a bad idea anywhere horses are kept. The corners are what make any wire fence last, so we build braced corners that keep the wire tight for years. We can also add a strand of electric wire on the inside to stop leaning and chewing.

Orchards, Gates and Long Runs

On orchard properties, fences often need to keep deer out of young trees and keep people and vehicles on the right roads. Tall deer fence protects new plantings until the trees can stand on their own. Long runs along roads and ditches call for good bracing and line posts spaced right for the ground. Gates matter just as much: a farm gate should be wide enough for the biggest equipment you'll ever bring through, hung on a post that won't lean, and set to swing clear of the ground. If you're on the edge of town, we're in nearby Chico every day, and we do a lot of the same farm work farther south around Gridley.

Around the House

Closer to home, many Durham families want a fence that looks good from the road and keeps kids and dogs safe in the yard. Wood privacy fences and wood post and rail are popular out here, since they fit the country feel. Vinyl ranch rail is another good choice for the front of a property, since it never needs paint. And a gate hung on a solid post with good hinges keeps closing cleanly for years instead of dragging on the ground by the second summer.
